Finally, I have written to a number of opera companies and
impresarios in the United States (since January) trying to
stir some interest in a revival of Donna Diana. An English
translation would be most helpful in persuading a producer
to put on a new production. My knowledge of English is, to
say the least, limited. (I think dry is the sum of one and
two, fear is one less than five, sex is the number between
five and seven and nine is the opposite of yes.) Professor
Frisch has indicated that you might be willing to consider
rendering the opera into English, or may know somebody who
is. The translator would, of course, retain full copyright
to the work and be entitled to at least a small recompense
for any use of the translation. I am enclosing a synopsis,
a piano-vocal score and a typewritten copy of the libretto
that I believe to be the original libretto by von Rezniček
based on a comedy by the Spanish playwright Moreto. (I can
also obtain if needed a printed copy of a new version done
in 1933 by Julius Kapp. From what I have been told it is a
modernization supposedly to bring it up-to-date. Don Cesar
is a toreador. Perin is his manager.)
